A popular fad that was made famous in the 1980s was the shoulder pad on women's clothing. This was a time when fashion for women in the workplace began to really make statements, and that is exactly what shoulder pads did. Giving the illusion of broader shoulders on women, these once called "mannish" looks became very catchy.
